Recalling his wartime experiences on his 100th birthday in 2019 he said: "It was bloody awful but you were in it and that was it - you couldn't just walk out of the door."

R.I.P, hardly anyone left now from that generation.

I went to a talk once years ago at Newhaven fort given by someone who was in the queue but never got through for which he seemed quite grateful looking back. Amazing story he told.
